The Lost Wood Process

In this demo, Art will demonstrate how he turns spindle blanks that are made up of three laminated layers. After turning, the middle layer is removed and the two outer layers are rejoined to give a turned object that isn't round. More details can be found in my American Woodturner article "Beyond Round: The Lost Wood Process" (August 2012) SEE HERE.

As an example of this process, he will show how to make a standard turned box that ends up being almond shaped in cross-section (inside and out). The demo shows the glue up process (including grain matching), turning the box, disassembling and reassembling the layers. This should be understandable and within the abilities of club  members.

Art's background in his own words:

"As for me, I’ve been demonstrating for clubs and symposia internationally for over 20 years, have taught at Arrowmont and John C Campbell in the US and at Ecole Escoulen in France.  I've demonstrated at symposia in Canada, France, and in the US (several AAW symposia, Utah, SWAT).  I participated in a woodturning collaborative event in New Zealand and an international collaborative sculpture making event in Ireland - see the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UND1bkq4VIs for the latter.   I am staff to two Siamese cats.  I’m a retired University professor and I play bass guitar - most recently in a big band and a jazz trio.  I’m a pretty decent cook having made smoked chili rellenos this week starting with smoking the turkey.  I also made mashed potato waffles for the first time last week."
